2023 ushered in new changes to our annual lookbook!

We are building an ongoing, cohesive lookbook over the full year, with new “Chapters” added on the 2nd of each month.

Each chapter will feature approximately 10 new ethically made, fair trade designs to continue throughout 2023.

This April Chapter features 8 new designs from East Asia and India, as we continue celebrating artisanal craftsmanship and world culture.

We hope you can feel the hope behind each design in our April chapter, knowing every piece has been crafted by the hands of a woman rising from poverty through your sales.

Before I became an Artisan, life was very hard, socially and economically. I was living in a very poor family. It was very hard for my father. That’s why I decided to start working. My friend was doing some beadwork, so she guided me to this work. Then I moved to quality checking and sizing of the products. I like my work!

Now, it’s good to help my father and family. I have personally and professionally grown up. It’s like a good dream to help family. My dreams are big to start my independent work! I’m trying hard to achieve that dream. I’ve purchased a two-wheel vehicle. In the future, I dream of my own home!

Bai’s Story of Hope

Bai grew up in a poor rural village in North Asia. As a teenager, she left home hoping to find work, only to quickly become overwhelmed by the challenges of living in a big city alone. Vulnerable and needing immediate income to survive, she began working in a brothel.

When community volunteers reached out to Bai at the brothel and offered her safe housing, counseling, and job skills training, Bai began her journey of hope as a jewelry Artisan. Now she’s paying it forward by helping other sex-trafficking survivors learn how to become Artisans too.

Shan’s Story of Hope

When Shan came into the office, our Outreach Director almost melted into tears. She remembered Shan. Shan was in a dark brothel in a village on the verge of being torn down when they met. Shan lit up on that first visit as our Outreach Team Director, with her new baby greeted her. Shan, a mom too, doted on the baby’s chubby little legs. After a few months of visits, Shan was simply gone. The Outreach Team thought they’d never see her again. Yet three and a half years later, she came!

We received a call from Shan who said she knew someone in our office. She shared that her contact was an American with dark hair who had a small baby boy. It could only have been our Outreach Director, although her son was already 4 years old by then. She shared that she had recently returned to our city and was hoping that the offer of a safe job at Starfish Project was still available.

Shan shared her story – from compounded childhood trauma, being sold into a marriage as a teenager to being sent to work in brothels. She left our city years ago to escape an abusive relationship yet on that day, she was back and ready to begin again. The seeds of hope have taken root and she is flourishing.

Mosmeen’s Story of Hope

I was married off at a very young age to a man from another village. This is the tradition in our village. When the girls become teenagers, they are married off by their parents for a better life. The girls have no say. Sadly, some years later, my husband deserted me. I was left alone with my three children and no security or dignity.

Now I’m happy that I’ve become independent. We have our dignity and economic security. All three of my children can go to school, and I’m also able to support other female Artisans in my village.

Asha’s Story of Hope

There are no opportunities in India if you don’t have a good education, and all I have is a skill I learned from my mother. My mother taught me basic weaving and braiding. I shaped up this skill and polished it to become a Team Leader in this workshop where today, I have nine women working with me.

Everyday coming to work and having a sense of responsibility and accountability for work gives me pride in what I do. I have also taught my skills to a lot of women who have made a difference in their lives by this work. I dream of giving my daughters a good education. The eldest one wants to be a doctor and the other two want to be teachers. All three girls are bright, so we want to fulfill their dreams academically.

To touch on this trend, our Voyager Bucket bag is a great everyday option that works well with both bohemian and classic styles. Customization and Layering Necklaces – While layering necklaces have been trending for several seasons, we continue to see this expressed in new ways. Chanel runways are a perfect example of how to layer necklaces together to create a bold look.
