The First Chapter of our 2023 Lookbook has arrived!

These designs will usher you into a year of blossoming hope with looks to last every season!

2023 Design Concept: A New Perspective

Impressionism was an art movement that rebelled against traditional ways and embraced modernity. This signaled a change causing the world to look at everything with a new perspective. Much like the Impressionists, we want to embrace a shifting world in which the woman who is crafting each accessory is as important as the woman who wears it.

With Claude Monet’s “Water Lilies” as our inspiration, we collaborated with our talented artisans to build a trend-forward collection with room for individual expression. Colors include lavender, tranquil blues, and calming greens, all reflections of Monet’s artwork while simultaneously trending hues on 2023 runways.

Tying both trend and artisanal style, we sought to create a collection with multiple releases that build upon itself. Providing easy ways for everyone to confidently coordinate products from one chapter to the next and maximize the impact they make for women around the world!

When you shop your favorite pieces in the collection, you are standing with women around the world who are leading their families out of poverty and human trafficking. Who knew that on-trend accessories could be such a powerful force for good in the world?!

The new year brings new changes to our annual lookbook!

We are building an ongoing, cohesive lookbook over the full year, with new “Chapters” added on the 2nd of each month. Each chapter featuring new ethically made, fair trade designs to continue throughout 2023.

January’s chapter features 12 designs from East Asia, Haiti, India, Peru, and the Philippines.

Celebrate artisanal craftsmanship and world culture this season with 12 new designs (plus a combination of two bracelets to save on a beautiful Haitian duo!)

Our January chapter will warm your winter days as it warms your heart, knowing every piece has been crafted by the hands of woman you’ve helped through your purchase.

Meet the Artisans behind the January chapter of our 2023 Lookbook:

Aqua Huggie Hoops

The Impact of your Sales:

In East Asia, poverty encourages sexual exploitation of women in brothels. These women want to provide for their families but have few options. Your purchase helps provide sex trafficking survivors with holistic care, dignified income, and hope.

Shan’s Story of Hope:

When Shan came into the office, our Outreach Director almost melted into tears. She remembered Shan. Shan was in a dark brothel in a village on the verge of being torn down when they met. Shan lit up on that first visit as our Outreach Team Director, with her new baby greeted her. Shan, a mom too, doted on the baby’s chubby little legs. After a few months of visits, Shan was simply gone. The Outreach Team though they’d never see her again. Yet three and a half years later, she came!

We received a call from Shan who said she knew someone in our office. She shared that her contact was an American with dark hair who had a small baby boy. It could only have been our Outreach Director, although her son was already 4 years old by then. She shared that she had recently returned to our city and was hoping that the offer of a safe job at Starfish Project was still available.

Shan shared her story – from compounded childhood trauma, being sold into a marriage as a teenager to being sent to work in brothels. She left our city years ago to escape an abusive relationship yet on that day, she was back and ready to begin again. The seeds of hope have taken root and she is flourishing.

Kaia Earrings

The Impact of your Sales:

In the Philippines, finding employment as a woman in poverty can be extremely difficult. Poor working conditions, lack of job security, and unfair pay are often the realities. Through your purchase, these women are receiving an income, health care, and social development programs. This allows these women to realize their potential and pursue their dreams in a safe environment. You have the opportunity to change lives!

Haiti is home to almost 500,000 orphans. The majority of Haiti’s orphans have not been orphaned by parental deaths, but instead have parents, grandparents, and relatives who love them, but surrendered them to orphanages because they could not feed them. This local workshop in Haiti provides parents with opportunities to earn sustainable income that empowers them to keep and provide for their children.

Retchel’s Story of Hope:

I’m thankful that I learned the skills to be a capiz Artisan because without this work, it would be harder for my husband and me to support our children’s studies. Being a capiz Artisan enables me to save money for the repair of our house which I thought was impossible or something out of reach. I can still attend to my children whenever they need me because this Artisan community allows me to work from home.

I am very thankful to this Artisan community and their buyers for their consistent orders. Even though businesses stopped during the pandemic, we still received orders. During those times, we did not have any other source of income because the factory where my husband works halted their operations. Capiz orders helped us get by. We pray that our buyers’ businesses will continue to prosper. I hope that someday we’ll be able to finish the construction of our house and all of my children will be able to finish their studies.

Gold Croissant Hoops

The Impact of your Sales:

In East Asia, poverty encourages sexual exploitation of women in brothels. These women want to provide for their families but have few options. Your purchase helps provide sex trafficking survivors with holistic care, dignified income, and hope.

Dong Dong’s Story of Hope:

I’m so happy I joined this Artisan community! Our working environment is very warm and loving. Everyone is so helpful and willing to help you learn and develop new skills. Our boss is very generous, and every manager is kind and willing to help employees. I’ve learned that when we work as a team, we can accomplish anything.

Before I joined this Artisan community, my daily life schedule was not good. I worked late at night. I didn’t eat well or sleep well. After joining this workshop, I have a much healthier schedule and my work isn’t so exhausting. It’s rewarding! My health has improved a lot. I’ve changed my whole person and begun down a path that allows me to have dreams for my future!

Caribbean Coast Bracelet, Willow Bracelet and Caribbean Willow Set

The Impact of your Sales:

Haiti is home to almost 500,000 orphans. The majority of Haiti’s orphans have not been orphaned by parental deaths, but instead have parents, grandparents, and relatives who love them, but surrendered them to orphanages because they could not feed them. This workshop in Haiti provides local parents with a safe workspace to earn sustainable income that empowers them to keep and provide for their children. These Artisans in Haiti are overcoming extreme poverty, political unrest, and gang violence, as they create ethically made jewelry, accessories, and home decor to keep their families together and provide their families with brighter futures.

Clivia’s Story of Hope

I come from a small family and was raised in one of the most dangerous areas in Port-au-Prince. I cannot imagine what life would be like without my work. I would have to depend on the help of others. I love when I hear there are new orders and that I’m able to come to work the next day! Trades of Hope and this Artisan community have helped by providing jobs.

I have my own family now, and we’ve moved to a safe area since I started working at this workshop. Now, I’m an independent woman and I’m able to help my mother. My dream is to have enough money to be able to build my own home!

Duo Bracelet

The Impact of your Sales:

This Artisan community is committed to their mission of keeping the techniques and art of their Peruvian ancestors alive by supporting an Artisan training center where they pass down their skills and traditions to vulnerable young people who live in areas of extreme poverty.

Sandy’s Story of Hope

One of my dreams is to study in college. My work is my way to solve the challenges of pursuing my studies. It wouldn’t be possible without it. Without my work, life would be difficult, because I couldn’t pay my expenses. I couldn’t study. I’m doing my best to keep both activities, even though it is difficult.

Now I’ve become an Artisan with good skills, and I’m able to make some decisions in the production and packaging process. My favorite part of the day in the workshop is mornings at 8, when we all arrive and prepare for our workday. It’s funny when our energies join! We are so pleased to work with Trades of Hope! We hope that you continue relying on handmade crafts!

Herringbone Necklace

The Impact of your Sales:

In India, poverty often leads to exploitation of vulnerable women in sweatshops. Every purchase provides these Artisans with fair wages, access to health care, education for their children, and care for elderly family members.

Madhvi’s Story of Hope:

Before I became an Artisan, life was very hard, socially and economically. I was living in a very poor family. It was very hard for my father. That’s why I decided to start working. My friend was doing some beadwork, so she guided me to this work. Then I moved to quality checking and sizing of the products. I like my work!

Now, it’s good to help my father and family. I have personally and professionally grown up. It’s like a good dream to help family. My dreams are big to start my independent work! I’m trying hard to achieve that dream. I’ve purchased a two-wheel vehicle. In the future, I dream of my own home!

Flora Charm Set

The Impact of your Sales:

India is home to one-fourth of the world’s poorest people. Vulnerable women in India are often exploited by sweatshops and human traffickers. In areas of extreme poverty, girls in traditional rural villages are often married off at a very young age through arranged marriages to relieve their families of the financial burden of caring for them. Your purchase provides women in India with safe jobs, fair wages, health care, literacy programs, and self-help groups.

Roshni’s Story of Hope

We belong to a lower economic stratum of society. In our community, girls are expected to marry at the maximum age of 18 years and remain inside, behind the curtains. Life without my work could have been very difficult. I would have simply married in some village. I also could not have completed my education. My life could be very limited.

I’m happy that in the last few years, I’ve had work and freedom. I am also happy that Trades of Hope respects the women Artisans! I’m able to help my family, as my father stopped working a few years ago, due to ill health. Now I and my brother have the responsibility to support our family. So certainly, life is better now.

Starlight Dish

The Impact of your Sales:

The Artisans we partner with in India do so much more than just create beautiful products. With every purchase, another family is empowered to rise out of poverty! In areas where vulnerable Artisans are often exploited in sweatshops, they now have opportunities to earn a dignified income, attend financial management classes, establish safe workshops in their homes and communities, drink clean water, and receive education and health care. These Artisans are now able to give their families a promising future because of your purchase!

Pinky’s Story of Hope

Pinky is passionate about painting and adds the final touches to the handcrafted wooden designs in this workshop in India. She lives with her parents in a small village nearby. As their only child, Pinky’s work as an Artisan empowers her to care for and provide for her parents. Family is important to Pinky, and she enjoys spending time with her family, playing games like Charades.

Her Artisan community helped ensure safe working conditions for Pinky and the other Artisans in this workshop by establishing an air ducting system, installing a fire extinguisher system, and installing clean drinking water for the Artisans. Every purchase of their handcrafted wooden designs supports local Artisans in areas of extreme poverty with safe workspaces, reasonable hours, and fair wages.

Emery Saddle Bag + Emery Crossbody Strap

The Impact of your Sales:

Using ancient leather crafting techniques, Artisans in India create beautiful traditional designs with modern function. Every purchase supports women and families in areas of extreme poverty by providing safe jobs and fair wages in communities where vulnerable women are often exploited in sweatshops.

Shanaz’s Story of Hope:

I learned my Artisan skills after my father died. All of us had to do something to keep our household running. I started as a helper. My first job as a stitching Artisan was here at this workshop. Now that I’m married, I use my income to maintain my home’s condition – getting doors and roofs repaired – and definitely saving for my daughter’s education!

Consistent work and not being worried about where my next month’s salary will come from is the greatest security for someone like me. During India’s lockdown, our workshop distributed food packets in our community. It wasn’t just for the Artisans. It was for the entire community! That’s what makes us feel proud being a part of this group where we have good companies like Trades of Hope that give us a sense of security.
