It’s time for the Sixth Chapter of our 2023 Lookbook!

Each month’s designs will continue forward to carry you through a year of blossoming hope with looks to wear + share!

2023 Design Concept: A New Perspective

Impressionism was an art movement that rebelled against traditional ways and embraced modernity. This signaled a change causing the world to look at everything with a new perspective. Much like the Impressionists, we want to embrace a shifting world in which the woman who is crafting each accessory is as important as the woman who wears it.

With Claude Monet’s “Water Lilies” as our inspiration, we collaborated with our talented artisans to build a trend-forward collection with room for individual expression. Colors include lavender, tranquil blues, and calming greens, all reflections of Monet’s artwork, while also simultaneously trending hues on 2023 runways.

Tying both trend and artisanal style, we sought to create a collection with multiple releases that build upon itself. Providing easy ways for everyone to confidently coordinate products from one chapter to the next and maximize the impact they make for women around the world!

When you shop your favorite pieces in the collection, you are standing with women around the world who are leading their families out of poverty and human trafficking. Who knew that on-trend accessories could be such a powerful force for good in the world?!

2023 ushered in new changes to our annual lookbook!

We are building an ongoing, cohesive lookbook over the full year, with new “Chapters” added on the 2nd of each month.

Each chapter will feature approximately 10 new ethically made, fair trade designs to continue throughout 2023.

This June Chapter features 8 new designs from 4 countries, as we continue celebrating artisanal craftsmanship and world culture in Guatemala, India, Nepal, and Uganda.

We hope you can feel the hope behind each design in our May chapter, knowing every piece has been crafted by the hands of a woman rising from poverty and trafficking through your sales.

The Impact of Your Purchase

As a war refugee, Florence wanted to provide more for her family and her community. She’s inspired so many women in the slums of Uganda by giving them the tools to make an income and have hope for their future. They’re now able to afford better living conditions, medical expenses, and send their children to school. Florence shared with us that many of these women are understanding their worth for the first time in their lives, as they experience the joy of dignified work!

Florence’s Story of Hope

Before I started working with Trades of Hope, I used to live hand to mouth and I was dependent on my brothers for house rent, school fees for my son and medical bills but that changed when I started working with Trades of Hope. I am now self-reliant, have acquired assets like land, and constructed a house in the village. I have access to better medical care and pay my own medical bills. I am also able to support other vulnerable relatives and people from the community. I am stress free and not worried about the future anymore.

I never thought I would be able to buy land and build a house but now I have land and a house. I can now access good medical care, support other vulnerable relatives and do other businesses like agri-business.

Premlata’s Story of Hope

“My job has changed my life in a way that we have a form of income now. Apart from looking after the family, we also have something good and useful to do. It gives us some confidence and income. Having our own earnings gives us a good feeling and I can help with the needs of my children. If I did not have work, our life would be very inactive and completely dependent on my husband. Also, I would not have awareness and confidence. Therefore, it is important that we have some work, at least a few hours a day, and have an income of our own.

Thanks to Trades of Hope for giving us important work! It helps us to earn an income and become self-dependent. We believe that it is important to be self-dependent and have self-respect. We also believe that women and men are equal and should have equal opportunities.

I have two children and my dream is that my children should get a good education. I also dream that the work will continue, so that we can have an income and do not have to ask help from others. Through work we are achieving our dream.”

Rafiqan’s Story of Hope

“Since becoming an artisan a lot of stability has come in my life. It definitely gives us strength and we can plan our coming months and not live by day to day. The regular work and income has made it easy for me to send my kids to school. I dream my kids are able to go to college and finish their higher studies without any hiccups.”

Rafiqan lives near Jaipur, a city renowned for its legendary artisanal workshops. Extreme poverty in many of the surrounding villages often results in the exploitation of vulnerable Artisans – especially women – in sweatshops with unsafe workspaces, unreasonable hours, and unfair wages.

Committed to empowering Artisans, this workshop trained Rafiqan in the art of leather crafting. She began as a materials cutter and can now make an entire bag – from start to finish – by herself! Now Rafiqan is able to earn a living wage in a safe clean workspace.

Razia’s Story of Hope

My brothers taught me this skill of polishing & finishing the products. This is our family business, so when I completed my primary education, I started helping my family business and doing work like polishing and finishing while at home.

Now I am working, economically independent, and living a respectful life. Most of the women in my community are homemakers; they only do household work, but I work and support my family. I also encourage other women to join me at work. I want to get married, settle into life, and continue with my work. Atitlan Kimono

Named after Guatemala’s beautiful Lake Atitlan, this kimono is naturally dyed with local plants and woven by hand in the nearby village. From the sustainable collection of the plants used to create the blue color in the Atitlan Kimono to boiling and setting the color in the thread of the kimonos, the process takes Guatemalan Artisans several days to complete one kimono. Artisans like Juana Maria use a combination of Guatemalan Indigo and “Sacatinta” plants to create this beautiful blue color. This process is similar to how the Artisans’ Mayan ancestors created clothing hundreds of years ago, truly creating and preserving a work of art.

This is because people like you purchase their work!

Juana Maria’s Story of Hope

“Weaving was always a part of my family, my mom was a wonderful weaver and my dream from a young child was to sell my own creations. My favorite part is creating inks, cause nature is unpredictable and at the same time marvelous. In my community, we are all artisans, my group of artisans is always helping and teaching other artisans to develop their skills and give them the opportunity to work with us to have a better income and a better life. My business started to grow and all the artisans, mainly women, noticed this in their income.

Trades of Hope has opened a door to the international trade of our products and we are so grateful for that. Every new customer that we get and every new order that they make take us closer to achieving our dreams.”

Every purchase helps provide them with education, jobs skills training, and seminars about health, nutrition, and women’s rights. Your purchase helps create social change for women in Nepal.

Shilu’s Story of Hope

“Weaving has always fascinated me. I used to watch a brother from my neighborhood weave for hours. I kept learning to weave different patterns by watching others. I would observe them and then try to weave the patterns on my own. I started to buy threads and sold hand-woven Dhakas at markets. But with the increasing prices of threads and lower return of wage, selling dhakas barely covered my expenses. That’s when I learned about this Artisan community.

Everything has changed since I joined this Artisan community. It’s allowed me to turn my passion to weave into a profession I love. I no longer have to worry about finding customers or markets for my products or about getting the right value for my work. Without weaving, I wouldn’t have gained the respect I receive in my community.”

Trend Report: June Lookbook Chapter

Why a trend report?

The more accessories you like, the more women we can help globally.

The women we partner with, who ethically make our accessories, know this, too. We study runways and trends and design pieces alongside our Artisan Partners so that, together, we can create products YOU WANT. They don’t want charity purchases. They want you to LOVE the work of their hands. We hope you love our June Lookbook Chapter as much as we have loved creating it for you!

Mixed Material Statement Earrings – Summer is all about colorful statement earrings and this season is no exception. Ulla Johnson and Carolina Herrera both showcased bold mixed material earrings throughout their runways. Our Mira Earrings are the perfect eclectic statement featuring hand-twisted raffia, mango wood beads and faceted semi-precious moonstones. These beauties are not only mini works of art, they are providing life changing jobs for women in India.

Summer Totes – Summer totes never go out of style and the 2023 designs focus on oversized totes made of wicker, straw, jute, and other natural materials. Max Mara featured chic straw totes with leather details whereas Botegga Veneta showcased an oversized woven variety. Our Bisa Tote is the perfect chic yet functional jute tote for the summer. With this tote creating jobs in areas of extreme poverty in India, it is an essential for your summer wardrobe.

Ikat/Indigenous Textiles – Designers often feature prints and techniques inspired by ancient artisanal designs. Ulla Johnson’s 2023 runways included vibrant ikat patterns throughout her collection. We also chose to honor this ancient Guatemalan craft in our Atitlan Kimono. Hand-dyed using plants found locally, our Guatemalan artisans create the perfect summer coverup that not only honors this traditional craft, but provides jobs for women.

Statement Bracelets – 2023 could be considered the return of the bold bracelets. Most designers styled their collections with bold cuffs or large resin bangles. Johanna Ortiz featured an ivory beaded statement bracelet in her resort collection. Stack several of our Alabaster Tassel Bracelets from Uganda for a similar look or add some color with our Indra Bracelet which is helping support families in India.

Wooden Accents – Adding natural wood accents is a great way to bring richness and depth to your home. Some of the most elaborate tablescapes have a mixture of linens, fresh greenry/flowers and a wooden coaster or plate. Our Lotus Trivet and Coasters are a perfect addition to your table to add a intricately hand carved finishing touch. These pieces are changing lives for artisans in India coming out of extreme poverty.
