It’s time for the Fifth Chapter of our 2023 Lookbook!

Each month’s designs will continue forward to carry you through a year of blossoming hope with looks to wear + share!

2023 Design Concept: A New Perspective

Impressionism was an art movement that rebelled against traditional ways and embraced modernity. This signaled a change causing the world to look at everything with a new perspective. Much like the Impressionists, we want to embrace a shifting world in which the woman who is crafting each accessory is as important as the woman who wears it.

With Claude Monet’s “Water Lilies” as our inspiration, we collaborated with our talented artisans to build a trend-forward collection with room for individual expression. Colors include lavender, tranquil blues, and calming greens, all reflections of Monet’s artwork, while also simultaneously trending hues on 2023 runways.

Tying both trend and artisanal style, we sought to create a collection with multiple releases that build upon itself. Providing easy ways for everyone to confidently coordinate products from one chapter to the next and maximize the impact they make for women around the world!

When you shop your favorite pieces in the collection, you are standing with women around the world who are leading their families out of poverty and human trafficking. Who knew that on-trend accessories could be such a powerful force for good in the world?!

2023 ushered in new changes to our annual lookbook!

We are building an ongoing, cohesive lookbook over the full year, with new “Chapters” added on the 2nd of each month.

Each chapter will feature approximately 10 new ethically made, fair trade designs to continue throughout 2023.

This May Chapter features 8 new designs from 5 countries, as we continue celebrating artisanal craftsmanship and world culture in the Dominican Republic, Kenya, India, Peru, and Thailand.

We hope you can feel the hope behind each design in our May chapter, knowing every piece has been crafted by the hands of a woman rising from poverty and trafficking through your sales.

Sandy’s Story of Hope

“One of my dreams is to study in college. My work is my way to solve the challenges of pursuing my studies. It wouldn’t be possible without it. Without my work, life would be difficult, because I couldn’t pay my expenses. I couldn’t study. I’m doing my best to keep both activities, even though it is difficult.

Now I’ve become an Artisan with good skills, and I’m able to make some decisions in the production and packaging process. My favorite part of the day in the workshop is mornings at 8, when we all arrive and prepare for our workday. It’s funny when our energies join! We are so pleased to work with Trades of Hope! We hope that you continue relying on handmade crafts!”

Rosaura’s Story of Hope

“I learned how to make jewelry as a hobby when I was twelve years old. When American outreach teams came to build homes, I would participate in workshops with jewelry designers. I found my passion! I love designing jewelry!

Before I became an Artisan, my life was very different. A few years ago, I had a problem with depression and felt that I had no friends. I was always isolated and did not talk to anyone about it. But today, I’ve overcome my fears. Now, I can be confident and make plans for my life and learn new things. Becoming an Artisan has also helped me to fulfill my dreams of studying, since my family is very poor and I’m one of five children. In my future, I hope to finish my studies, become a professional, and have my own business.”

The Impact of Your Purchase

This workshop was founded by a local woman who had witnessed too many women in Thailand’s rural villages desperate to feed their families and being forced to leave their children behind to find jobs in the city, so they could send money home.

So, she created this workshop that offers skills training, business mentoring, scholarships for Artisans’ children, emergency health care coverage, micro-loan programs, and job flexibility that allow women, like Sa, to work from home. Every purchase of this bracelet supports this rural village workshop in Thailand and helps these women help their families prosper!

Sa’s Story of Hope

Sa grew up in a small traditional town in Thailand where many people did not value girls, nor encourage them to pursue their dreams. But Sa was blessed with parents who encouraged her to dream big and become independent. So, Sa followed her dreams and moved to the city to become the main materials purchaser for this Artisan community.  She often visits different communities and marketplaces to find new trends and fabrics.

“I love doing something that gives me freedom and independence. I grew up in a small town where many had limited ideas of how a girl should act. Now, I’m the main purchaser of materials and make a difference! I love making a difference and being creative.”

As Artisans, these women are overcoming discrimination, abuse, and extreme poverty, as they lead their families to experience new lives filled with healing and hope.

Pooja’s Story of Hope

“My father passed away quite a while ago. So, it’s my mother, my brother, and me. My work gives us a regular and steady income. It gives us a sense of job security… and that’s what Trades of Hope has provided… a sense of job security. Without worrying, I’m able to support my family and most importantly, pay for my brother’s education.

One of the most important things I’ve learned as a person is to stand for myself and work with dignity. Definitely, getting a good wage is one of the perks of being a part of this Artisan community, but the most important thing is the friendly and clean working environment. All the Artisans are treated equally and with utmost respect. I dream of becoming a master Artisan.”

Trend Report: May Lookbook Chapter

Why a trend report?

The more accessories you like, the more women we can help globally.

The women we partner with, who ethically make our accessories, know this, too. We study runways and trends and design pieces alongside our Artisan Partners so that, together, we can create products YOU WANT. They don’t want charity purchases. They want you to LOVE the work of their hands. We hope you love our May Lookbook Chapter as much as we have loved creating it for you!

Block Print – Christian Dior Pre-Fall 2023 runways celebrated Indian artistry throughout their collection featuring exquisite block printed and hand embroidered designs.  We couldn’t be more excited to illuminate this time-honored craft by introducing our Block Print Tote. Not only is it the perfect reusable tote for shopping, but it helps create jobs in areas of extreme poverty in India.

Lavender & Lilac – Multiple designers introduced refreshing hues to runways by implementing pops of light purples throughout collections. From Ulla Johnson to Jason Wu, designers showed how uplifting this color can be. Our Periwinkle Studs, Agate Key Bracelet, and Orchid Stripe Bracelet make the perfect combination to brighten an outfit and add some color while simultaneously helping create job opportunities in India, Thailand, and the DR.

Natural Home Decor –  While there is a myriad of home decor styles, design trends have gathered a lot of inspiration from nature. Natural materials have been and will continue to have a strong presence in home decor. This is why we have introduced our beautiful Mandala Tray made of eco-friendly wood. Not only does every purchase create jobs in areas of extreme poverty in India, but it is a beautiful symbolic reminder of resilience for your home.
