“I learned my Artisan skills after my father died. All of us had to do something to keep our household running. I started as a helper. My first job as a stitching Artisan was here at this workshop. Consistent work and not being worried about where my next month’s salary will come from is the greatest security for someone like me. “The lowest point of my life was when I lost my husband. I was afraid and wondered if I would ever be able to earn enough to support my family. I knew about a leather bag workshop where a lot of women worked. I was able to secure a full-time job and started to work for the first time in my life. 

Now, I’m the sole earning member of my family. I’m able to send all three of my kids to school, take them on holidays, and buy things for them. I also take care of my mother-in-law. “Ten years ago, my home was in an urban slum, where I lived with several family members. My father had a job where he could earn enough to take care of our large family. Due to ill health, my father had to leave his work and move where we live now. When we moved I had to leave my studies, I attended school only until 8th standard.  

I had heard a lot about the jewelry workshop and Moon. I had heard about her activities and I longed to be her co-worker. I admired the way she was leading her life and I wanted to follow into her footsteps. Starting to work at this workshop was a turning point in my life. Now I was earning my own money.  

Today, I have more confidence. I became more aware about the fact that we can change our life for the betterment. I also believe that every woman has the capacity to work at par with man. Through the various programs they offer, I believe that my future is secure. The good aspect is that I get paid fair wages. Many of my friends working in other places earn far less than me. They are still the victim of exploitation. 

Working here, I have became more aware about the difference between the right and wrong. I participate in women’s meetings. Life is more meaningful now than before. At home life was naive as we only ate and slept. At work, I was trained to become an artisan as it was my wish. I enjoy making jewelry.”

Meet the Artisan: Mae Lee’s Story of Hope

When I was 15 years old, my mother needed money, so I was trafficked to Greece. I worked there for six years. I was finally helped and returned back to my home country after six incredibly painful years. However, I had no idea what to do when I arrived. With only a primary school education, it was extremely difficult to find a job.

This Artisan community stepped in and offered me a new beginning. I was excited to study literacy, English, math, and computers. Through the program the Artisan community offers, I discovered my passion for capturing beauty. I’ve received specialized training and mentoring from professional photographers. Currently, I take many of the product and model photos for our organization. I came to this Artisan community with no confidence in myself, but now, I take pride in my work. At this workshop, I know who I am, and I feel a sense of purpose. I have a community that is like family to me and I have been able to pursue dreams that I once thought were impossible.

“I was married off at a very young age to a man from another village. This is the tradition in our village. When the girls become teenagers, they are married off by their parents for a better life. The girls have no say. Sadly, some years later, my husband deserted me. I was left alone with my three children and no security or dignity.  

Now I’m happy that I’ve become independent. We have our dignity and economic security. All three of my children can go to school, and I’m also able to support other female Artisans in my village.”

Preserving the ancient Artisan traditions of her ancestors, Maribel creates beautiful amate paper art from the bark of local trees that grow near her village in Mexico.
